The World Cup came to Mexico City on Sunday, and one of AAA‘s biggest stars made sure he had a seat. El Grande Americano turned up at the legendary Estadio Azteca for Mexico’s clash with England, decked out head to toe in Mexico World Cup gear.
For a masked luchador whose entire gimmick is being a cartoonishly proud “American,” showing up to scream for El Tri is exactly the kind of beautiful contradiction that makes him one of the most entertaining acts in wrestling right now. WWE‘s Spanish-language account documented the whole thing.
He Brought a Date to El Tri
Americano wasn’t flying solo. WWE Español also caught him in the stands with his girlfriend, Andrea Bazarte, who has done announcing work for AAA in the past. The two were dressed to match and ready to back Mexico together.
How Americano Got Here
The man under this particular mask has become a genuine phenomenon in AAA. He beat the original El Grande Americano in a mask vs. mask match at Noche de Los Grandes at the end of May, and the loser unmasked as Chad Gable, who has since returned to WWE as a babyface. The version repping Mexico at the Azteca is the one who won the mask.

The World Cup detour is a nice breather before things get violent again. After a new version of Perros del Mal (Daga, Bronco Nima, Berto, Angel, and Karmen Petrovic) jumped him during a recent episode of AAA on FOX, Americano promised to confront the group next week, and this time he won’t be alone.
