Wrestling’s favorite real-life tag team just leveled up. Nixon Newell, best known to WWE fans as Tegan Nox, is engaged to her partner of more than five years, Miranda Alize.
Alize broke the news herself on Instagram over the holiday weekend, posting a photo of her ring with the caption “Happy 4th of July 🎇 Im engaged 💍.” Fans of the indie scene had been rooting for this one for a while.

Who Are Nixon Newell and Miranda Alize?
Newell, a Welsh wrestler born Steffanie Newell, signed with WWE in 2016 and became a Mae Young Classic standout before injuries slowed her singles push under the Tegan Nox name. Alize (real name Miranda Ilissa), a Houston native who wrestles as “The Lucha Baddie,” has bounced between the indies, WWE’s Mae Young Classic, and a run of AEW Dark appearances over her own decade-long career.
Together, the pair have spent the past year working joint bookings on the independent circuit under the tag team name Violent Romance, turning their real relationship into one of the more charming acts on the scene. Newell has also said she expects 2026 to be her final year as an active in-ring competitor, which makes the timing of the engagement feel like the start of a new chapter rather than a footnote to an old one.
The AEW Walkout That’s Worth Remembering
Newell and Alize‘s names got a very different kind of headline back in November 2025, and it’s worth revisiting now that both stories have had time to play out. The pair had just debuted as a team on AEW Collision when they were booked for a follow-up match against Tay Melo and Anna Jay on the November 8 taping. According to their own account, the match had been allotted just three minutes, and after talking it over with people backstage, they and the agents in the room agreed that three minutes “wasn’t going to do good for anyone.” With the all-clear given, Newell and Alize left the building before the show went on the air.
It wasn’t a shouting match on the way out, by Newell‘s own telling, but Wrestling Observer‘s Dave Meltzer reported afterward that it was unlikely either woman would be booked by AEW again.
How That Night Set Up Maya World’s Breakout
Here’s the part that makes the story worth telling twice. With Newell and Alize gone, someone still had to fill that spot opposite Tay Melo and Anna Jay, and the call went to Maya World and Hyan. The two were reportedly “over the moon” about the last-minute shot at television time against a main event-level team, even in a losing effort.
That short-notice opportunity turned out to be the first domino. World kept building from there, and by this summer she was the story of the Owen Hart Cup, a last-minute tournament replacement who upset her way to the final against Mercedes Moné at Forbidden Door while wrestling through the loss of her brother. None of that erases what happened in November, but it’s a reminder of how often wrestling’s biggest breaks start with someone else’s exit.
Congratulations Are in Order
Newell and Alize haven’t announced wedding plans yet, but the wrestling world has already started sending its love. We hope Violent Romance gets a storybook ending to match the tag team name.
