Drew McIntyre has carried a sword to the ring for years without ever actually using it on anyone. As it turns out, that was not for lack of trying. He once pitched Vince McMahon on a plan to lop an opponent’s arm clean off with it.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, McIntyre explained that the whole point of a sword is that at some point it should do something. “The sword is silly if you never use it,” was basically the logic, and he had a very cinematic fix in mind.
The Saving Private Ryan Pitch
McIntyre wanted a sequence that spilled backstage and into a pre-taped segment where the blade finally connected. His reference point was the way war films stage realistic injuries. “I was like, in Saving Private Ryan, they use actors, like amputees, etc. They lop off the limbs they’re actually missing. Very realistic,” he said. “I think at Mania or something, we should have a fight sequence where we end up backstage, then we hit the pre-tape where I swing the sword at somebody. Whoosh, arm comes off. Finally, I use the sword, pay it off.”
Vince Did Not Get It
There was one problem. The man he was pitching had never seen the movie. “Vince had never seen Saving Private Ryan, so I explained,” McIntyre said, admitting that he talks fast when he is excited and McMahon was mostly nodding along. “Half the time, he’s like, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, sure Drew.'” The pitch went nowhere.
McIntyre owned that the idea was a lot. “It’s bothering me. I’m a stickler for details,” he said. “I’ve had the sword for so long. I have to stab someone.”
He Finally Gets His Wish
The sword has hit the ropes, the ring, and Adam Pearce‘s table over the years, but never an actual human being. McIntyre is getting his payoff somewhere other than Raw, though. He finally gets to wield it in Agent of Shadows, WWE’s new vertical micro-drama series with ReelShort, which premiered this week. No amputees required.
