WWE and Netflix just gave fans their first real look at how they’re closing the book on John Cena‘s in-ring career. The trailer for Season 3 of WWE: Unreal dropped today, and it confirms what the announcement teased back in June: this season is built entirely around Cena’s goodbye.
As we covered when Netflix first confirmed the season, WWE: Unreal has become the show that pulls fans inside the writers’ room, the trucks, and the gorilla position while WWE‘s biggest storylines get built (and rebuilt) in real time. This trailer makes clear the emotional weight Season 3 is carrying, with glimpses of Cena backstage in the lead-up to what became his final match.

The footage leans hard into the send-off, cutting between Cena processing the end of his career and the locker room reacting in real time to his final run. Netflix’s official synopsis for the season reads: “John Cena says goodbye, a fan favorite returns, and the next generation of WWE Superstars rise to the occasion. WWE: Unreal takes viewers inside the writers’ room as injuries, last-minute pivots, and career-defining decisions reshape WWE’s biggest season yet heading into WrestleMania 42.”
The “fan favorite returns” line is confirmed to be AJ Lee, whose surprise return became one of the year’s biggest storylines. The trailer also folds in glimpses of the season’s other threads, including the rise of stars like Trick Williams, Lash Legend, Stephanie Vaquer, Oba Femi, and Bron Breakker.
Premiere Date, Episode Count, and Cast
WWE: Unreal Season 3 premieres on Netflix on July 21, with five episodes running roughly 50 minutes each. Beyond Cena and Lee, the confirmed cast includes Cody Rhodes, Liv Morgan, CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Chelsea Green, and Matt Cardona, alongside the rising names mentioned above. Chris Weaver and Erik Powers return as showrunners, with the series produced by Omaha Productions, NFL Films, Skydance Sports, and WWE.
Where We Left Off
Season 2 closed at SummerSlam, where Cody Rhodes defeated Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship. From there, Cena flipped back to fan favorite for his retirement tour, which ended with his final match against Gunther in December. Season 3 picks up that thread from the inside, with the trailer suggesting it will be one of the more emotional runs the show has produced yet.
