TNA is bringing back one of its most feared traditions. Lockdown, the annual show where every single match happens inside a steel cage, is returning on Sunday, August 23, live from Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago, marking the event’s first appearance since 2016.
For anyone who grew up on TNA in the 2000s, that’s a big deal. Lockdown debuted in 2005 as the first pro wrestling pay-per-view in history where the entire card was locked inside cages, and it quickly became one of TNA‘s three flagship annual events alongside Slammiversary and Bound for Glory. The inaugural show featured AJ Styles against Abyss and introduced the Lethal Lockdown match, TNA‘s own spin on WarGames, where two teams enter one at a time in alternating fashion and the fully-enclosed, weapon-loaded cage doesn’t open until everyone’s inside.
Over the years, Lockdown main-evented some legitimately legendary matchups: Samoa Joe versus Kurt Angle, Sting versus Mick Foley, and a run of Lethal Lockdown wars that helped define the promotion’s identity. The event ran every year from 2005 through 2016, closing out its original run at Wembley Arena in London, where Matt Hardy beat EC3 in a steel cage to win the TNA World Championship in front of a sold-out crowd.
Why Chicago, and Why Now
The 2026 edition will be TNA‘s first-ever live event at Credit Union 1 Arena, the venue formerly known as the UIC Pavilion. It’s a building with its own pro wrestling history: WCW’s Chi-Town Rumble was held there in 1989, headlined by Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat against Ric Flair for the NWA World Championship, with Sting, Lex Luger, and The Midnight Express also on that card, per TNA’s own announcement.
This year’s Lockdown will also be the first to include wrestlers from WWE‘s NXT brand, a direct result of the ongoing working partnership between the two companies. It’s a small detail with a big implication: a show built entirely around TNA‘s most nostalgic gimmick is also going to be one of the clearest showcases yet of how far the WWE–TNA relationship has come.
The Card So Far
Four matches are locked in, with more expected to be announced this month:
TNA World Tag Team Championship (Steel Cage): Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy (c) vs. Nic Nemeth and Ryan Nemeth
This is the marquee match on paper, and it’s a direct follow-up to what we covered here at The Stunner when the Broken Hardys won their fifth tag title reign at Slammiversary. Now they defend that gold in a cage against the Nemeth brothers, with Nic Nemeth fresh off winning the TNA World Championship the same night.
TNA X Division Championship (Steel Cage): Cedric Alexander (c) vs. Leon Slater
TNA Knockouts World Tag Team Championship (Steel Cage): Rosemary and Allie (c) vs. M by Elegance and Heather by Elegance
Steel Cage Match: AJ Francis vs. Elijah
Also expected on the show, per TNA: Mustafa Ali, Moose, Brian Myers, Ricky Sosa, and a deep Knockouts division featuring Xia Brookside, Elayna Black, and Indi Hartwell.
