CM Punk has told a lot of stories in front of a live crowd. By his own account, none of them made him sweat like the night he proposed to AJ Lee in their kitchen.
Appearing on Stephanie McMahon‘s What’s Your Story? podcast, the Undisputed WWE Champion walked through the proposal in detail, and by his own telling, it almost fell apart before it even started. He’d hidden the ring inside a bouquet of flowers with a blank card meant to lead AJ toward the surprise. Instead, she walked right past it. “I put the groceries away, and she’s not paying any mind because there’s nothing written on the card, so I shot myself in the foot on that one,” Punk said.
He Says He Nearly Called the Whole Thing Off
While AJ put away groceries a few feet away, Punk said he just stood there, frozen. “I’m sure I put my hands in my pockets, standing really rigid, just looking at the flowers.” He admitted his nerves nearly got the better of him entirely. “So many things go through my head, because I’m literally like, I can run away right now. It hasn’t happened yet. I can abort mission.”
AJ eventually noticed something was off and picked up the card. The moment it registered, Punk said the room went quiet. “I get the ring out, and then she turned around and was just staring at me, and we both sat there with tears in our eyes for what felt like five minutes.” He was so overwhelmed he forgot the basics. “I think I said, ‘Do I get down on my knee?’ And she was like, ‘Yep.’ I got down on my knee and I said, ‘Will you marry me?’ And she said, ‘Yes.'”
Punk said the nerves hit him harder than anything he’s done in a ring or a cage. “All I remember is I was legit sweating. Sweat went into my eye.” He and AJ have kept most of their relationship private since, but he said this story was worth the exception. “We try to be very protective of our private life, but I think that’s a sweet story.”
The Proposal Wasn’t the Only Part of the Podcast Making the Rounds
The two-hour sit-down covered a lot more ground than the engagement story, and a few other moments have been circulating just as widely.
Stephanie McMahon showed Punk a set of fabricated social media posts, supposedly from Logan Paul, Becky Lynch, and Seth Rollins, all trashing him. Punk shut it down immediately. “This is why I don’t f*** with social media. These are like AI generated. These are fake quotes. Seth did not tweet this. Becky did not tweet this.” He went further, describing why fake quotes like these work on people at all. “I’m in the business of toying with people’s emotions. So if somebody’s going to read that and they’re going to believe it, that helps me in a way, you know? But there’s also Phil, who walks through parking lots with his wife, who has his head on a swivel because those people are out there.”
That led into a heavier exchange, with Stephanie asking directly whether he’d ever been the subject of a credible death threat. “Yes,” Punk said. “Yeah, I think they’re pretty slack on that too, by the way. I don’t think they’re catching all of them. Probably not. There’s been a few phone calls.”
On a lighter note, Punk also compared WWE‘s current regime to the one he worked under during his first run, saying the company is far more patient with young talent now. “I remember people getting fired because their punches sucked. And then we would all be down there in Kentucky like, ‘Oh my God.’ You almost didn’t want to get called up.” These days, he said, “the system’s a lot more accommodating, and I think there’s people in positions of power that actually want to see people succeed.”
Punk and AJ married quietly years ago and have kept things that way since, which is part of why a two-hour podcast full of unguarded stories, sweet and otherwise, made this much noise.
