Leon Slater Just Became the Youngest World Champion in TNA History, and He’s Only 22

Leon Slater is the new face of TNA Wrestling, in the most literal sense a championship can offer. Slater pinned Nic Nemeth with a Swanton Bomb in the main event of TNA Bound For Glory on Saturday night, and in doing so became the youngest TNA World Championship holder in company history. He’s 22 years old.

How Slater Got Here

Slater didn’t back into this. He won the X-Division Championship back at Slammiversary, then used his title’s built-in “Option C” clause at TNA Lockdown to cash it in for a shot at the world title, the exact kind of high-risk, high-reward move the X-Division was built around. Nemeth, for his part, had just reclaimed the TNA World Championship at Slammiversary by beating Mike Santana, and had held it since June.

Both men clearly understood what Bound For Glory meant. According to Wrestling Inc’s recap, Slater opened fast, a quick roll-up, a handspring back elbow, a crossbody to the floor, before Nemeth settled things down with a Famouser and a sleeper hold that looked, for a stretch, like it might be enough to drain Slater’s legs out from under him.

A Closing Stretch Built for a Highlight Reel

It wasn’t enough. The match’s final minutes turned into a back-and-forth trade of signature spots that’s going to live on wrestling Twitter for a while: a Rough Ryder and a Danger Zone from Nemeth, a 450 splash from Slater, Slater answering Nemeth’s Danger Zone with a Blue Thunder Bomb, then diving onto Nemeth on the outside for good measure. Fightful’s recap has him finishing the job with a splash into the Swanton Bomb for the pin.

The record itself is the headline, but it’s worth sitting with for a second: Slater is now the youngest world champion TNA has ever had, full stop, in a company with more than two decades of history and a list of former world champions that includes AJ Styles, Kurt Angle, and Samoa Joe. He’s not the youngest guy to ever hold a world title in wrestling. He is, as of Saturday night, the youngest one this specific championship lineage has ever seen.

What It Means for TNA

TNA has spent the back half of this year leaning hard into youth, and Slater becoming champion the same weekend Amazing Red entered the Hall of Fame and Frankie Kazarian won his third straight Call Your Shot Gauntlet reads like the company deliberately handing the keys to the next generation while still honoring the last one. Slater is a former X-Division Champion who’s been building toward a world title shot for over a year now, and Bound For Glory was the company picking its new guy in the loudest way possible: in the main event, with the veteran champion standing across the ring from him.

Nemeth doesn’t walk away from this empty-handed, either. He’s still one half of the TNA World Tag Team Championship with his brother Ryan Nemeth, so the family still has gold in the building. But the world title, for now, belongs to the 22-year-old who just made history getting it.
