Nigel McGuinness is not sitting this one out.
The AEW broadcaster turned in-ring competitor suffered a foot injury winning his first-round match against Katsuyori Shibata on the August 15 episode of Collision, part of AEW’s Continental Challenge Cup tournament. For a day, his spot in the bracket was in doubt. Then AEW posted his response, and it wasn’t a wrestler looking for a way out.
“This Could Be the Last Chance I Get”
In a video AEW shared Monday, McGuinness is seen in a walking boot, plainly in pain, and just as plainly not interested in stopping.
He said there’s no break or sprain, just something that “hurts like hell,” and that he’s not giving up his tournament spot, or the shot at Wembley Stadium that comes with winning it. Tony Khan has since cleared him for the quarterfinal round, according to Fightful and Wrestling Inc., though both outlets note AEW’s own doctors weren’t fully comfortable signing off.
Wembley Isn’t Just Any Stadium for Him
The stakes make more sense with the backstory. McGuinness‘s in-ring career was cut short in 2011 by a Hepatitis B diagnosis, and he spent over a decade as a broadcaster, most recently calling matches alongside Tony Schiavone on Collision, before AEW brought him back for one surprise moment: a shock return in the Casino Gauntlet at AEW All In, Wembley Stadium, in 2024, wrestling in front of his own hometown crowd as a Londoner. He called it “surreal” and “like a Hollywood movie” afterward.
Now 49 and, by his own account, nearing the real end this time, he’s framing the Continental Challenge Cup as a closing chapter that leads right back to the same building.
What’s Next
McGuinness faces current CMLL World Heavyweight Champion Hechicero in the quarterfinals this Wednesday on Dynamite. If that’s not enough on a bad foot, he’s also still scheduled to challenge Lee Moriarty for the ROH Pure Championship two days later at ROH Death Before Dishonor. Win Wednesday, and the semifinals await next week in Glasgow, with the finals set for AEW All In at Wembley on August 30, the same stage where his comeback started.
