WWE didn’t say his name once. It didn’t have to.
A vignette aired during Monday’s episode of Raw from the American Airlines Center in Dallas: blurred archive footage, fans holding SAWFT signs, fans wearing old Enzo & Cass merch, and a voice asking, “What happens when the whole world calls you ‘Can’t Miss?’ What happens when the whole world is wrong?” The lights come up on a silhouette. Then a date hits the screen: 8/3.
That’s the Monday after SummerSlam, and it means Big Cass is coming home.
The Timeline Checks Out
Fightful confirmed the vignette aired without naming Cass directly, but the visual cues left little doubt. The outlet also noted that Fightful Select had already reported back in June that Cass was set to leave AEW and return to WWE, so Monday’s package was less a surprise than a formal announcement. Wrestling Inc. and F4W/WON both independently corroborated the details.
Cass, real name William Morrissey, spent four years in AEW as Big Bill, most recently aligned with Chris Jericho in the Learning Tree. His AEW contract expired this July, clearing the runway for the move.
SAWFT, and Then Some
Cass and Enzo Amore broke out together in NXT, winning the promotion’s Tag Team of the Year award in 2015 before getting called up to the main roster the day after WrestleMania 32. “SAWFT” became one of the most-quoted catchphrases of the era. The partnership, and Cass’s first WWE run, ended in June 2018 when he was released following an off-script segment involving a wrestler with dwarfism during a feud with Bryan Danielson. Cass has since been candid about the period, telling eWrestlingNews he was “a full-blown alcoholic” at the time of his release.
Whether Monday’s vignette is step one of a full Enzo and Cass reunion is still speculation. Fans in the video are shown reciting Enzo’s old “and you can’t teach that” line, and Enzo himself was reportedly spotted at the WWE Performance Center back in May, but WWE hasn’t confirmed him for anything yet. For now, the only lock is Cass, and the date: 8/3.
Why It Lands
Eight years is a long time to be away, and Cass is returning with a cleaner story than the one he left with. He’s sober, he’s spent four years building himself back up in AEW, and the fan reaction to that “Can’t Miss” line landing on a Monday after SummerSlam suggests WWE is banking on nostalgia doing a lot of the heavy lifting. It usually does.
