Mike Santana is done being a mystery. On Monday, the former TNA World Champion posted a video to X confirming that his new WWE persona is Cruz Montana, ahead of his first speaking appearance on Tuesday’s NXT.
“Last week, I made my official debut on NXT and set the wrestling world on fire. All without saying a thing. But my actions let everyone know exactly what my sights were set on. Tomorrow night, live, I put words behind those actions, and for the first time, you get to hear what Cruz Montana has to say.”
The name wasn’t a total shock by that point. WWE filed a trademark application for “Cruz Montana” the previous Friday, and fans had already connected the dots. What nobody had yet was the why.
A Tribute, Not Just a Rebrand
A few hours after the video, Cruz followed up with the story behind the name, and it reframes the whole re-launch.
“CRUZ MONTANA. A name I put together as a tribute to honor my late father. Who I’ve always made sure to keep as close as possible to my journey. Losing him 6 years ago, is what sent me on the spiral that I’d eventually rise from, to become the man you see today. And today, that man ADDICTED TO GREATNESS. Here’s to this next chapter. LETS GET IT!”
That’s a lot to hand fans in two posts. A grief that reshaped his life, a spiral he pulled himself out of, and now a name built to carry his father’s memory into every future match. It’s the kind of backstory that turns a simple rebrand into something fans will actually root for.
