Happy Gilmore 2 co-stars Adam Sandler and Julie Bowen recently sat down for an interview with Chris Van Vliet and had nothing but praise for their fellow cast member, AEW wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF). In the upcoming sequel, MJF plays the son of Sandler‘s character.

During the interview, Van Vliet asked about their experience working with the former AEW World Champion. Both Sandler and Bowen spoke glowingly of MJF‘s talent and also shared their concern for him wrestling a match in the middle of filming. MJF himself seemed to appreciate the kind words, as he retweeted the clip from the interview.

Chris Van Vliet: “You know I’m a big wrestling fan, you are as well.”

Adam Sandler: “Yes.”

Chris Van Vliet: “You you’ve got a few wrestlers in this movie.”

Adam Sandler: “Yeah.”

Chris Van Vliet: “Becky Lynch, and also MJF as your son.”

Adam Sandler: “Yes.”

Chris Van Vliet: “What can you tell me about working with MJF?”

Adam Sandler: “Funny as hell.”

Julie Bowen: “So nice.”

Adam Sandler: “What a great kid, love him, family member.”

Julie Bowen: “I was a little concerned when halfway through he was going to fight.”

Adam Sandler: “He went and had a match and then had to come back the next day.”

Julie Bowen: “He had a match and came back, and I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is your best idea.’”

Adam Sandler: “He was alright. He he was at the Garden, I think it was.”

Julie Bowen: “And he goes, ‘I’m going to win.’”

Adam Sandler: “Yeah, yeah, but the things he has to do…”

Julie Bowen: “…what if you get…”

Adam Sandler: “He came bruised! He came, there was some…”

Julie Bowen: “Bruises you can cover.”

Adam Sandler: “He had some extra bruises, but he was a stud.”

Julie Bowen: “But like, what if he lost a tooth?”

Adam Sandler: “We’d fix it in post, calm down! What are you doing?”

Julie Bowen: “I was worried! I was like, ‘I don’t think you should do that.’ I was like, ‘you…’”

Adam Sandler: “Max, you truly love Max. He was a… that kid is jacked and he’s a stud. I’m happy to say he’s my fake son forever.”

Julie Bowen: “I’m proud of my fake son.”

Adam Sandler: “I love my fake son. And I love him in real life.”

Happy Gilmore 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 cult classic. With today being July 20, 2025, fans are just days away from its release on Netflix this Friday, July 25. The movie will see the return of Adam Sandler as the titular hot-tempered golfer, with Julie Bowen reprising her role as Virginia Venit and Christopher McDonald as the arrogant Shooter McGavin. The sequel is not short on star power, with a host of celebrities and professional athletes making appearances. Joining MJF from the world of professional wrestling are WWE Superstars Becky Lynch and Nikki Bella, who are also slated to appear in the film.
