Winning a championship on the grandest stage of them all is a dream for every WWE superstar. At WrestleMania XL, Grayson Waller and his tag team partner Austin Theory achieved that dream, capturing the WWE Tag Team Championships in a chaotic ladder match. The night should have been one of pure celebration, a time to relax and soak in the career-defining moment with colleagues and friends.
However, that post-show celebration almost turned into a headline of a different kind. During a recent appearance on the No-Contest Wrestling Podcast, Waller revealed that he nearly got into a physical altercation with an unruly fan at the hotel bar. The story took an incredible turn when an impromptu security team, composed of some of the toughest individuals in combat sports and professional wrestling, emerged to back him up.
A Confrontation at the Hotel Bar
Appearing on the No-Contest Wrestling Podcast, Grayson Waller shared a wild story from the night he and Austin Theory captured the WWE Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania XL. After the show, the new champions went back to their hotel bar to celebrate, but the night took an unexpected turn.
“I actually have a real story where I had almost a bar fight, and I had three people step up my team,” Waller began. “This is WrestleMania 40. After we won the Tag Team Championships, we go back to the hotel bar. Sometimes when WrestleMania stuff happens, the fans know what hotel we’re at, so we’re trying to have a good time and chill, and all these fat flops in black shirts and who stink are just like roaming around trying to grab you and all. It’s the worst.”
The situation escalated when Waller noticed a fan harassing some of the women from NXT.
“So there was a guy who kept just trying to grab and touch and talk to some of the NXT girls now, telling me this guy’s bothering us,” he explained. “So I went up to the bar to talk to him, and I was like, ‘Hey, can you leave the girls alone? They’re trying to have a good night.’ This guy was very drunk. He starts firing back at me. He goes to push me, and I’m like, ‘Man, I just won the Tag Team Championships. I’m going to get in a fight at the bar at WrestleMania. This is going to be the story.’”
The Ultimate ‘WarGames’ Team Assembles
Just as things were about to get physical, Waller found himself with some of the most formidable backup imaginable. One by one, a trio of legitimate fighters and industry veterans appeared by his side.
“Shayna Baszler, she’s like, ‘Is everything all good here?’ She’s talking to me. MVP walks up next. I’m feeling pretty good. Then, Josh Barnett. I’ve never met Josh Barnett, but I know of him. I know he’s a badass. He steps up next and goes, ‘Is everything alright here, guys?’”
Faced with a former UFC fighter, a former two-time United States Champion, and a former UFC Heavyweight Champion, the fan quickly reevaluated his choices.
“I sat down. I sat down at the bar, and I just looked at the guy like, ‘Hey, I’m good,’ like Shayna Baszler, MVP, Josh Barnett have my back,” Waller said. “There isn’t a man alive who I think can mess with this team before. So I almost had my own super team at the bar, WrestleMania. That guy, he disappeared real quickly, which was nice. I think I actually had a real-life team of four, WarGames bar team.”
Josh Barnett Confirms the Incident
This wasn’t just an exaggerated tale for a podcast. Mixed martial arts legend Josh Barnett later took to social media to confirm the story was true, noting that he would not stand for people being harassed in his presence.
He tweeted: “Someone isn’t gonna harsh a bunch of women and try and agitate people in my presence. Not the first time for a story like this.”
It serves as a wild look into the realities of being a public figure during WWE‘s biggest week and a reminder that some fans should probably learn to keep their hands to themselves.
