For years, every top star in WWE was on a mission to make the Undertaker break character and laugh. It would’ve been the ultimate badge of honor, forcing the toughest and most serious performer on the roster to shed his Deadman character for just a moment so the fans could see the real Mark Calaway.

“There was such a time period there, where I think that was the company’s goal — to see who could get me to break. It was nonstop,” Undertaker told Chris Van Vliet in an interview.

Superstars like Kurt Angle almost succeeded on multiple occasions (and arguably succeeded once) while some of Taker‘s best real-life friends like the Godfather pushed him to the very edge of breaking.

“I had indentations inside of my lip from biting it,” Taker once said about an in-ring rib the Godfather pulled on him (which you can watch below). “I’m cussing him like a dog inside of my head. I’m like, ‘Man, why you gotta do me like that? Nobody talks to the Undertaker like that. Why’ve you got to bring up hoes to the Undertaker.’ He was so proud of himself. It was close [to making me break].”
