The Mysterio name is getting a new chapter. According to PWInsider‘s Mike Johnson, Aalyah Gutierrez, daughter of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio and sister of Dominik Mysterio, has officially started training at the WWE Performance Center and is now listed on the company’s internal roster.
She’s currently listed under her real name, Gutierrez, rather than Mysterio. Per the report, that’s standard for new recruits while they wait on WWE to hand them an in-ring name, so don’t read too much into it just yet.
A Slow, Deliberate Build
This didn’t happen overnight. Aalyah first got in the ring with her dad last October, doing basic drills while Rey prepped for his own in-ring return. She came back in February for a longer session, and also spent time training with Natalya and TJ Wilson at their Dungeon, plus a stint at Lodestone, Bayley‘s training camp in Las Vegas. She graduated from UC San Diego last year with a degree in human biology before deciding to give wrestling a real shot.
Rey talked about that exact turning point earlier this year on What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes:
“So I said, ‘Okay, the next step would be, let’s see if you can go through a full week of training. And if you can do that and you like it afterwards, then maybe it’s something you might want to think about.’ I’m actually trying to get her out there pretty soon so she can just feel what it’s like to train every day. Wake up, work out all day, sleep, back, same thing. That’s insane. Like, I’ve thought about that and it scares me, but it also excites me.”
Aalyah isn’t a complete stranger to WWE programming, either. She’s appeared ringside for her father’s matches over the years and even had a brief on-screen romantic angle with Buddy Murphy back in 2020, much to on-screen Rey‘s dismay. That was strictly an acting role. This is the real thing.
She’s Not the Only One
Aalyah is part of a small wave of legacy names currently working out of the Performance Center. On August 11, Lexis King (son of Brian Pillman) posted a group photo from the facility that also included Aalyah, Marie Malenko (daughter of Dean Malenko), Uriah Connors (son of Fit Finlay), Avery Styles (son of AJ Styles, who we recently covered talking about wanting to one day tag with his sons), and Brooks Jensen (son of Bull Buchanan).
Rey made his WWE main roster debut in 2002. Dominik followed in 2020 and is still an active part of the Raw roster today. If Aalyah keeps progressing the way her father hopes, the Mysterio name could have a third generation on WWE television before long. Neither WWE nor the family has made anything official yet, but for a lineage this deep in the business, this is exactly how it tends to start.
